EDUCATION AND EARLY CAREER
Yunus schooled in Chittagong, by mid teens went on global tour thanks to Boy Scouts. He graduated from Dhaka U; a Fulbright scholarship gained a PhD in economics from Vanderbilt U in 1969. Then Professorship duties at East Tennessee U. In America, Yunus supported the Bangladeshi freedom movement when West Pakistan forces occupied Dhaka and was a unique pro-poor lobbyist at US congress - a story shared in 2012 on award of congress gold medal

Back at Chittagong University he's professor of economics. But macroeconomics theory was irrelevant to ending poverty so he led his class out to villages to do fieldwork.. Observing rural people in clutches of loan sharks, Yunus came up with microcredit - a 10 year evolution from first village loan to a sustainable bank for poorest women - ordinance 1983.
